Richard served in the Army and was injured by an IED in Iraq.  While hospitalized at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Luke’s Wings provided travel for his family to visit him.

Supporting our troops and veterans is a very personal cause to me.

I was born in Beautiful Beaufort South Carolina in Marine Corps country to Air Force parents (three siblings served as well, in the Navy and Army National Guard).

The apple doesn’t fall too far from the old tree and after college I moved to Washington, D.C where I later joined the Air Force Reserve.

While living and working (and drilling) in Washington I started volunteering with an organization called Luke’s Wings.

Luke’s Wings goal is simple, they fly the family members of wounded warriors to visit them while they are recuperating in military hospitals around the country like Walter Reed and the VA medical centers in Tampa and at Fort Bragg.

It’s a proven fact that having family close helps to motivate troops in their recovery.

So Luke’s Wings steps in to lend a hand in situations where the family may need assistance paying for their travel.

The great news is, Luke’s Wings recently expanded…with new chapters in the north east, the midwest and now a chapter here in Eastern North Carolina.

There are so many ways you can volunteer, from planning fundraiser events to visiting with wound warriors or attending events in your community to spread the word.

If you are interested in joining the Down East Chapter of Luke’s Wings send me an email to receive a volunteer checklist, application and find out how you can help!!

Here's to supporting our men and women in uniform, and be sure to check out the pictures of some of the families Luke's Wings has helped.
