(AP) - Stock prices are higher on Wall Street.
This second trading day of the new year is looking better than the first. The market is coming off of yesterday's sharp declines.
A day ahead of the monthly employment report, the Labor Department says the number of new claims for jobless benefits dropped by 21,000 to 336,000.
The Commerce Department reports that orders to U.S. factories rose in November by the largest amount in four months. At the same time, a key reading of business investment dropped for a second straight month.
The family that owns Landmark Communications is exploring a sale of assets, including The Weather Channel and nine daily newspapers. Landmark CEO Frank Batten Junior says the privately-held company has retained JPMorgan and Lehman Brothers to help it explore a possible sale.
