(AP) - Stocks took a hard fall after investor fear was fueled by a weaker-than-expected jobs report.
The December unemployment rate shot up to 5 percent, while non-farm payrolls expanded by a meager 18,000 jobs. Increased talk of recession followed release of the report.
The Dow fell 256 points to 12,800, down 4.2 percent for the week.
The S&P 500 dropped 35 1/2 points to 1,411, off 4.5 percent this week.
And the Nasdaq composite today gave up 98 points to 2,504, down 6.5 percent this week.
On the broader market, decliners beat advancers by a 3-to-1 margin.
Volume on the Big Board came to about 4 billion shares. Nasdaq volume was more than 2.4 billion shares.
