(AP) - Stocks rallied from the opening bell and the gains held through the close.
Helping to put Wall Street in an upbeat mood was a preliminary earnings report from IBM with better than expected results.
Investors seemed to look past a warning from the parent of Sears and Kmart that its earnings could be down more than 50 percent from a year ago. The dollar dropped against major currencies, while gold closed above $900 an ounce in New York.
The Dow gained 171 points to 12,778.
The S&P 500 rose 15 points to 1,416, while the Nasdaq surged 38 points to 2,478.
Advancing issues topped decliners by a 2-to-1 margin.
Volume was more than 3.5 billion shares on the NYSE. Nasdaq volume was more than 2.1 billion shares.
