Millions of Americans will give money to charities before the end of the year.
Beware because some so-called charities are really out to take your money for themselves.
You need to make sure your money is going to the right place if you don't want to get scammed.
Check the charity's website, the Better Business Bureau website or go online to Charity Navigator.
They can tell you a lot about how a charity's finances and whether it's on the verge of getting shut down.
"In this difficult economy we think there are going to be many charities that, unfortunately, are going to close. You want to make sure that your money goes to a place that's established or that you know is going to be here for tomorrow," said Art Taylor of the Better Business Bureau.
It’s also a good idea to avoid making donations over the phone.
Take a closer look at charities that you haven't supported in the past.
