Toyota says this is the software fix...that will take care of the braking glitch in its hybrids. This morning the company bowed to pressure, announcing the recall that had been expected since last week: 437-thousand Prius and other hybrid vehicles around the world.
Toyota has already received about 200 complaints from hybrid owners in the US and Japan. Drivers report a delay when they hit the brakes, particularly on bumpy roads or in cold weather.
Here in the US, the recall affects 133-thousand Prius cars and 14-thousand Lexus vehicles.
Toyota says owners will start receiving letters about the recall next week...advising them to bring their cars to dealers for a repair.
The new software will update the controls on the antilock brakes...with each repair expected to take about 40-minutes.
Toyota is already reeling from the last round of recalls, affecting more than 7-million cars worldwide because of problems with the gas pedals. A huge blow to a company that has always taken pride in quality.
In Washington...the Transportation Department says it's staying in close contact with Toyota... And continuing with a safety investigation of its own.
