ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) - Reports of high cadmium content in children's jewelry imported from China are prompting a senior U.S. senator to press for a bill to ban the toxic heavy metal as a hazardous substance from those products and toys.
New York Democrat Charles Schumer plans to present details of his proposal Wednesday in Rochester, N.Y.
In a statement, Schumer says there is enough evidence to show how dangerous the metal is, and therefore action must be taken immediately.
Schumer is reacting to an Associated Press investigation that found high levels of cadmium being substituted for lead, which is now banned in bracelets and charms.
