UNITED NATIONS (AP) - George Clooney has been cast in a new role -- he's now a U.N. messenger of peace.
The actor visited U.N. headquarters today for a ceremony and a new lapel pin marking his designation for the special job.
Clooney was appointed by Secretary General Ban Ki-moon. He was selected for his ability to focus public attention on interational issues.
Clooney took on the job after waging his own campaign for an end to the yearslong war in Sudan's Darfur region, recently returning from a two-week trip to Africa.
Clooney says its an honor to be named a peace messenger, and that the designation carries more responsibility than an Oscar -- which he had won for best supporting actor in "Syriana."
Clooney says he plans to focus his attention on Darfur and other spots he knows best, but adds that he wants to travel broadly in his new U.N. role.
