RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - The person who heads North Carolina's efforts to treat the mentally ill, substance abusers and the developmentally disabled is retiring at the end of the month.
The state Department of Health and Human Services announced Friday the departure of Mike Moseley after nearly four years on the job.
Moseley's task has been a difficult one, as the state has struggled to implement a mental health reform plan started in 2001. The effort has resulted in uneven care in some areas due to a lack of doctors, psychiatrists and crisis services.
Department Secretary Dempsey Benton announced last month several steps to correct problems in the state's mental hospitals and with crisis services. Benton also said staff responsible for the hospitals would report directly to him, rather than Moseley.
