Morehead City, NC – Between now and the end of June 2008, Carteret County Health Department is able to offer its current program of free screening and treatment for breast and cervical cancer to more Carteret County women. Additional state funding makes it possible to enroll about 30 additional women.
According to Ann Baugham, Nursing Supervisor for the Health Department, the Breast and Cervical Cancer Control Program (BCCCP) has offered a set number of patient openings in the 50 to 64 years age group only. “Now, we can offer the BCCCP program to additional women starting at the earlier age of 40, plus we are opening up our cervical cancer screening to women from ages 18 to 64 who qualify.”
“We want to encourage women who have not had regular screening tests to contact us to see if they are eligible for BCCCP. We would like to share information about how to lower their risks of developing these types of cancers, and to promote early detection. Both are highly curable when found and treated early.”
To qualify for BCCCP, a woman must fall within certain income guidelines and either have no insurance or be underinsured.
“Please call us, if you think you may qualify,” states Ms. Baugham, “and we will be glad to go talk with you.”
The Health Department is located at 3820 A Bridges Street, Morehead City. The telephone number is 252-728-8550.
