In recognition of Tobacco-Free Awareness Week, January 20–26, several smoke-free dining guides help smokers go "cold turkey" and offer nonsmokers a smoke free alternative to dining out. The guides feature 100% smoke-free restaurants with numerous restaurants listed for Beaufort, Pamlico (includes listings for Craven and Lenoir), and Martin counties.
"Many people only think about the effects of smoking on the individual smoking, but all people near a smoker are affected too," said Megan Hauser, a youth tobacco prevention coordinator serving the Northeastern North Carolina Partnerrship for Public Health (Touch No Tobacco-TNT), funded by the Health and Wellness Trust Fund of North Carolina.
Secondhand smoke, which comes from the burning of a cigarette and exhalation of a smoker, is classified as a Group A carcinogen that causes an estimated 3,400 lung cancer deaths and accounts for up to 69,600 heart disease deaths each year among nonsmokers in the United States.
"We want to encourage former smokers who kicked the habit in the New Year to keep on going," said Hauser.
