(AP) - Health researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill are sharing nearly $4 million in federal funds for cancer and other research projects.
Senator Elizabeth Dole said Thursday she helped secure the funds.
The university will receive $2.4 million for the North Carolina Cancer and Genomics Research Center, more than $560,000 for the Program in Racial Disparities and Cardiovascular Disease and $984,000 for the Collaborative Initiative in Biomedical Imaging.
Cancer is the leading cause of death in the state with 17,000 deaths a year and 41,000 new cancer cases annually.
