Before your child starts sixth grade at a public school, he or she has to meet the state's new Tdap booster vaccine requirement. The shot prevents tenanus, diptheria, and pertussis.
This also applies to 12-year-olds in private schools, and home schoolers who haven't been vaccinated in the last five years. First year college students who haven't been vaccinated in the last ten years, are also required to do this.
The Pitt County Health Department says a recent study suggests the vaccines lose effectiveness after 10 years. Its goal is to keep older children vaccinated and in order to keep younger children who have received fewer vaccines from being infected.
