The National Kidney Foundation says in Eastern North Carolina's 29 counties, kidney disease affects an estimated 200,000 people, and the numbers are climbing.
To celebrate World Kidney Day, the foundation came to town to offer free kidney screenings to citizens. They say early detection is the key to preventing and treating the disease before it leads to things like dialysis and kidney failure.
The foundation’s Vice President of Eastern North Carolina says, he understands the importance of this all too well. He says, "Because I know what they're going through…I’ve experienced dialyses. I’ve experienced a transplant. I’m thirteen years out." It’s this experiences like these that the National Kidney Foundation works to prevent.
They will return to the east for another free screening on April 19th. They’ll be at the Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church in Rocky Mount. The church is located at 652 Raleigh road. To set up an appointment call Lois Hedgepeth at 252-469-3131.
