WASHINGTON (AP) - Federal health advisers have voted to keep certain anemia drugs on the market, but with some key restrictions.
A Food and Drug Administration panel says anemia drugs sold by Amgen and Johnson & Johnson should only be used by patients with untreatable forms of cancer.
The experts also voted to withdraw the drug's use in patients with breast or head-and-neck cancers.
The anemia drugs have been plagued by concerns that they can increase the risk of death and tumor growth.
The panel's decision could cost the companies hundreds of millions of dollars in lost sales. But the recommendation was not as restrictive as had been feared. Shares of Amgen have climbed by more than 4 percent in afternoon trading.
