If it seemed like you spent more time in the waiting room during your last emergency room visit you probably did.
Pitt County Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department Medical Director, Dr. Timothy Reeder says in January their average wait was 37 minutes. And within an hour, 82% of those people were in treatment rooms. Today’s numbers compare to February’s, with a wait time of about 72 minutes. And 72% of those waiting are being admitted within the hour.
Dr. Reeder says that the number of patients is higher than the demand of patients. That’s just one of many issues causing longer wait times at hospitals in the east. But in the east, more flu cases are a part of the blame.
P.C.M.H has plans to tackle this issue. Dr. Reeder says, "We are working on initiatives…with labs, with radiology to help increase the turn around time with those services." The hospital also plans to increase the number of emergency department physicians, and the number of beds in the facility. He says that all of this is in an effort to eliminate emergency room wait times all together.
