NASHVILLE, Tennessee (AP) - The Southern Baptist Convention says its churches in the U.S. baptized fewer people in 2008 for the fourth year in a row to reach the lowest level since 1987.
LifeWay Christian Resources, the Southern Baptists' publishing arm, reports that there were about 342,000 baptisms in 2008 compared with almost 346,000 in 2007.
Membership in America's largest Protestant denomination also fell slightly last year.
Total membership of U.S. Southern Baptist churches was just over 16 and a-quarter million in 2008 -- down more than 38,000 from 2007.
