It's been a sad year for many Americans, but for those feeling down in the dumps psychologists say you can "turn that frown upside down".
Science says you can improve your happiness and your resilience, but it's not fool-proof.
Some suggest writing down all the things you're grateful for, recognizing your strengths and utilizing them.
If practiced regularly, positive psychologists say you're almost guaranteed to be happier.
But, while it's proven you can train yourself, some professors say it's not a blanket fix.
"I wouldn't feel comfortable offering a one size fit all solution to any set of problems that a given individual is facing, without understanding that person's circumstances," said Adam Grant, Management Professor of the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania.
Positive pyschologists say the key to being happier is focusing on non-material things.
