A new study is bringing some relief to expectant mothers this flu season.
Researchers surveyed 20 thousand mothers and found popular antibiotics like penicillin and erythromycin aren't associated with most birth defects.
Doctors say the results show that treating infections, like the flu, won't put the mother and child at risk.
But it did link two antibiotics, sulfonamides and nitrofurantoins, to severe birth defects.
Those medicines are used to treat urinary tract infections.
"The most common type of bacteria infection that happens after the flu is what they call a secondary infection. The same kind of bacteria that causes pnemonia," Dr. Jacques Moritz, Director of Gynecology, Roosevelt Hospital.
Doctors say you should still weigh the pros and cons of medications before you take them while you're pregnant.
