NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) - A federal appeals court in New Haven, Conn. has heard arguments about New York school officials' refusal to rent public school buildings to churches for weekend worship services.
Alliance Defense Fund counsel Jordan Lorence argued that a lower court's 2007 permanent injunction allowing churches to rent public school buildings on the same terms and conditions as all other groups should stand.
School officials contend that renting buildings to churches would be unconstitutional. Lorence says the court seemed divided during arguments yesterday and that he's not sure how it will rule. Lorence says ADF will seek an appeal to the Supreme Court if it loses.
Lorence says a loss could have widespread implications for religious groups meeting in schools elsewhere in the country.
