LONDON (AP) - European researchers have a warning for western women about cancer and weight.
While up to 8 percent of cancers in Europe are already connected to being overweight or obese, experts say that figure is poised to increase substantially as the obesity problem grows.
And as current major causes of cancer, such as smoking and hormone replacement therapy for menopausal women, drop dramatically, being fat could become the leading cause of cancer in women in Western countries.
Andrew Renehan, a cancer expert at the University of Manchester, presented his findings to a joint meeting of the European Cancer Organisation and the European Society for Medical Oncology today in Berlin.
Renehan says that in the U.S., some studies found obesity was responsible for up to 20 percent of cancers.
