NEWPORT, N.C.- One animal shelter in the East must fix up or it may be forced to shut it's doors for good.
The Carteret County Humane Society houses hundreds of animals, but some state officials say it needs to see major repairs and fast.
Michelle Ieva says there's no question that this non-profit shelter needs some major changes. But what's not so obvious is where the money to do that will come from.
She says "Extra costs like replacing a window that could provide at least fresh air, we don't have the budget for".
From rusted cages and doors to a leaking roof to peeling paint, a state inspector gave the shelter 45 days to start making those much needed changes. That was on February 10th.
Shelter Manager Candace Christopherson says "Some of them are more costly than others so it's going to require a lot more donations than normal".
Christopherson says it costs about seventy-three dollars to take care of just one animal during its stay at the shelter. With close to 200 pets here now, you can see how quickly that adds up.
Christopherson says any amount of money will help so the shelter doesn't have to close for good, and so these animals still have a place to call home.
The shelter couldn't put an exact cost for all the repairs needed, but say it'll be in the thousands.
