Do you have one of those GPS devices to help you find your way around?

Well, thieves are stealing global positioning systems at an alarming rate according to the FBI.

In many cities, the number of GPS devices owned by the public has more than doubled.

Police in Greenville say GPS thefts increased by more than 500 percent.

Police say thieves stole 9 of the devices from cars all of last year, but so far this year that number has jumped to 47.

Of course more people are getting the devices but police also say drivers leave the devices where people can see them.

“Think like a criminal.  When you’re walking by your own car, look in it and say, ‘you know what if, I was a criminal I’d like to take that,’ and if you say that to yourself imagine what the criminal is saying.  Just take care of it and take it out of your car,“ said Kip Gaskins of the Greenville Police.

Gaskins says write down the serial number of your machine.

It makes it easier for them to track down a stolen unit if thieves pawn them off.
