New “Catfish” Hunter ALS clinic to open in Greenville

A new clinic will open this week to help people struggling with ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s Disease.
   
Folks from Pitt County Memorial Hospital will cut the ribbon on the new clinic in Greenville on Friday.
 
It will be the only multi-disciplinary clinic in Eastern North Carolina to serve people with ALS.   

The Jim “Catfish” Hunter ALS Foundation of Hertford helped fund the clinic. “Catfish,” a Major League Baseball Hall of Fame pitcher, was diagnosed with ALS in 1998 and died a year later at the age of 53.
   
The disease attacks nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, leading to paralysis and usually death.
