A marine from New River Air Station drowned this weekend in Pender County.

The Pender County Sheriff’s Office says 20-year-old Demorion Bryant was swimming with friends in a quarry off Lee Road in Maple Hill.

Friends told detectives Bryant disappeared underwater and he never came back to the surface.

The friends also told detectives Bryant couldn’t swim and that he was trying to stay in shallow water.

But Pender County detectives say there is a steep drop off in the quarry. Divers found Bryant’s body in about 20 feet of water.
