SCLC speaks out about public comment regarding Tuesday’s shooting

Tuesday morning’s shooting has certainly stirred up emotions in many people, but one group says some of those emotions could lead to more violence.

The Southern Christian Leadership Conference says messages posted on public forums about the shooting are raising concerns that retaliation could be next.

SCLC President Rufus Huggins says he is responding to what he calls community out cry against violence and racism.

“The main concern is the things they’re reading in this that’s trying to incite race into this situation downtown,“ said Huggins.

With a stack of comments printed from public forums in hand, Huggins pleaded with people to stop trying to make Tuesday mornings shooting a black and white issue.

He said, “This is what’s going to cause this problem. What people are seeing in the paper and what they’re pulling off the internet.“

One comment on The Daily Reflector’s web site states, “Let the riots begin!“

Huggins says, “You’ve got a segment of the community, of the white community, that’s trying to make a racial issue out of it. You have a segment of the black community that goes back to the 60’s and the 50’s when you had those things that happen that’s beginning to wonder is this going to happen now.“

He says the SCLC in no way condones the actions of that morning; he simply does not want others to pay for one person’s mistake.

But there are some comments siding with Huggins.

One post on The Daily Reflector’s site states, “Those that bring race into it are part of the problem. Race should not have anything to do with this discussion.“

While there’s no way judge the credibility of anyone’s written thoughts and Huggins says they have not received any threats, he wants to put a stop to potential problems before they happen.

For the party stating “blacks are mostly on the news as far as crimes”... there’s a reason for that. Blacks do most of the crimes. Just check the stats. This is an prime example of what I mentioned originally. Accept responsibility. It’s always easier to blame the media, law enforcement, the way you were raised, your family…anyone but yourself. If the black community continues to turn a blind eye to the situation, and not accept responsibilty, it WILL NOT get any better. It’s that simple.
And as far as catching up to other parts of the country, I’m sure most Carolinians wish we were in the condition of California, Mississippi, Indiana, Louisiana, and a half of dozen others states…broke and double digit unemployment. That’s not our idea of “catching up”.

I can’t believe what I’m reading. Beachchick was right about one thing. The NEWS shows mostly blacks. Guess white people don’t commit crimes down South. lol. They are still trying to play that mental game down here and the less educated and not knowing are falling for it. You have a long ways to go Southerners before you are up to speed with the rest of the country.

Why is it when blacks commit crimes against whites it’s “never a race crime”, according to black leaders, but they are the first to call out “race crime” when it’s reversed. Until the black community admits there’s a problem within the community it will not get any better. It’s like a drug user or alcoholic not admitting their problem. It never gets any better until they do. There is an epidemic of crime by blacks and very little is being done. When Mr. Huggins should be addressing this issue he’s again playing the race card. Go to court any given day…almost every day look in the newspaper or watch your local news. The crimes are mostly committed by blacks. Why doesn’t anyone address this issue? Until the black community accepts responsibility and steps up to the plate it will only get worse.

No, race shouldn’t be an issue, but it is.  And that’s only because, if you notice, everyone that has been arrested for burglary, rape, or murder that was shown on the news was not white.  That’s not the white people’s fault!  It’s there own dang fault.

WOW! I can’t believe that race was even mentioned with this incident. I see the South is still stuck in the 60’s. It’s 2009 people. Up North, they think of Southerners as slow, dumb, hicks. Born in N.C., I would try to defend that type of thought but behavior like this makes it hard.
