LOS ANGELES (AP) - Mary-Kate Olsen says Heath Ledger was a friend and his death is a "tragic loss."

In a statement released by her publicist, she says her thoughts are with his family during this very difficult time.

Olsen's name has been linked to Ledger because police say a masseuse called her three times before dialing 911 after finding Ledger unresponsive in his bedroom.

Police say Olsen, who was in California, summoned her personal security guards to Ledger's Manhattan apartment to help.

Ledger's family says their "hearts are broken." In a death notice published in The West Australian newspaper, the family remembers him as "the most amazing old soul in a young man's body." In a separate notice, Ledger's father writes "no more chess games mate...this is it, couldn't beat you anyway."
