(AP) - Instead of clipping coupons to save money, a growing number of consumers are clicking at their computers to get discounts on grocery bills. Supermarket chains are trying out paperless or digital, coupons in an effort to pass along savings to their customers. Instead of clipping the coupons out of newspapers or inserts, shoppers load the online discounts onto their store loyalty cards and get the credit at the checkout. Grocers see the innovation as a way to build customer loyalty. In addition, it may make it easier to attact shoppers who don't bother clipping coupons. In addition, it makes sense for grocers who won't have to worry as much about the handling, tallying and shipping of coupons. It can also reduce the amount of paper used.
