National Night Out events around the east

Many local police departments in the East are hosting events tonight to celebrate the 25th Annual National Night Out. Sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch, National Night Out is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, generate support for local anti-crime programs, strengthen neighborhood spirit and to send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back. 9 is On Your Side with some National Night Out locations in the East and what is in store for you if you plan to attend.
GREENVILLE:
A good night to get to know your neighbors. Please join the Greenville Police Department for National Night Out Against Crime. It will be held Tuesday August 5, 2008 from 6:00 pm until 8:30 pm at the Greenville Town Common. Ride the GREAT bus free during this event. Last pickup will be at Reade Street at 9:20 pm. WINTERVILLE
The Winterville Police Department is holding its annual “National Night Out Against Crime” on Tuesday, August 5th 2008 at 7:30 pm. The festivities will begin at 7:30 pm in front of the Winterville Town Hall. Refreshments will be served to all attending the event. Music and Fellowship activities will be enjoyed by all.
MOUNT OLIVE
On Tuesday, August 5th, neighborhoods throughout Mount Olive are invited to join forces with thousands of communities nationwide for the “25th Annual National Night Out”. From 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. on August 5th, residents in neighborhoods throughout Mount Olive and across the nation are encouraged to lock their doors, turn on outside lights and spend the evening outside with neighbors and police. The Town of Mount Olive will be hosting festivities at Westbrook Park from 6:00 to 8:00. Local businesses will be serving refreshments. The Mount Olive Police Department and local businesses will be passing out souvenirs for the kids. Residents are invited to stop by Westbrook Park but are asked to spend the evening with the residents in their neighborhood.
Chief Schroeder would like to personally thank the citizens that have shared in the responsibility of fighting against crime in Mount Olive by sharing information with the police, forming community watch groups and beautifying the neighborhoods they live in. “Without the help and support of the residents of Mount Olive we (the police department) couldn’t get the job done that we have so far”.
BEAUFORT
The Beaufort Police Department will be hosting a National Night Out event at the Beaufort Elementary School on Tuesday, August 5th, 2008.
HAVELOCK
NNO is nationwide and is celebrating its 25th anniversary on August 5, 2008. Starting at 5:30 pm until 9:00 pm at Walter B. Jones Park. This is Havelock Police Departments 12th year of sponsoring NNO. 2007 witnessed approximately 6,000 visitors to NNO. This year promises to be even larger. Cherry Point MCAS will be joining the event this year. There will be free food, (While supplies last) games and entertainment for everyone.
JACKSONVILLE
The National Night Out event is our 10th annual event to support community partnerships with law enforcement. The event is being held at Riverwalk Park in downtown Jacksonville on August 5th starting at 6:00 and ending with a fireworks extravaganza at 9:30. There will be over 200 vendors from local area businesses and non-profit organizations supplying information on community resources and safety tips. The event is the 25th nationally and is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watches (natw.org) Historical information is available on their website. The night is a community effort and the theme is to “Give Crime a Going Away Party”. PEDRO, Cherry Point’s search and rescue helicopter, will be conducting a live water rescue. The United Way is showing the Dr. Seuss movie “Horton Hears a Who” on a 30x30 movie screen. We will also have our bicycle giveaway and school supplies for the children. There will be a petting zoo, pony rides and entertainment. Lots of activities for the kids and adults. Entertainment will be provided by Mardi Gras and Sammy O’Banion on the main stage and local groups on the second stage near the waterfront.
