UPDATE: ECU Game, Police Excessive Force Investigation
ECU Brutality Under Investigation
ECU Brutality Under Investigation
The big win has been marred by an after the game incident. That incident has several police departments and the school investigating claims that the police over reacted when jubilant students stormed the field. There are two incidents, specifically, that East Carolina University Police Chief Scott Shelton says they are investigating for claims of excessive force. The first one is where an officer is seen seemingly throwing punches. The other is an incident where an officer slams a person to the ground. Shelton says, celebration is not a crime and use of excessive force is unacceptable.
“There’s no denying what you saw on film was sickening in nature, now what we have to do is make sure that we do a thorough investigation and find out, not what the person did for him to be taken to the ground, but why the punches were thrown,” Shelton says.
Shelton did not disclose the law enforcement agencies being investigated for excessive force. He says it’s up to each individual department to deal with disciplinary action. ECU Police says the investigation will take a few days before they wrap up. They are taking complaints, calls, and looking at various videotapes. Lenoir County, Kinston and Pitt County Law Enforcement are all looking into it.

Unfortunately, ECU’s victory against West Virginia is being overshadowed, after an incident between fans and the police.
An investigation is underway to determine whether law enforcement officers used excessive force against fans after the Pirates’ big win.
Officials are sorting through facts, and there’s lots of video and complaints swirling around on the web.
However, many are agreeing on one thing, officers took things too far.
An ESPN video shows one incident where an officer is seemingly throwing punches.
In a statement from the university, they say they are interviewing several witnesses about different accounts and looking at pictures and video tapes to sort out exactly what happened.
Meanwhile, the Kinston Department of Public Safety has initiated an investigation into the events surrounding the incident.
Officials say the investigation will be thorough, and will include the actions of the officers and events leading up to the confrontation.
We would also like to hear from you. Do you think law enforcement officers were justified in their actions following ECU’s win over West Virginia Saturday?

GREENVILLE, N.C. (AP) - Police officials at East Carolina University are investigating reports that officers used excessive force as fans stormed the football field after a Pirate victory.
University police chief Scott Shelton said investigators are reviewing photos and videotape and interviewing witnesses.
The Daily Reflector in Greenville reported Monday that witnesses described police hitting fans and throwing some to the ground after the Pirates beat West Virginia on Saturday.
Video footage showed an officer hitting someone on the ground with his fist.
Shelton said in a written statement that police were told if fans tried to come onto the field they should try to deter them by making themselves visible but were to step back if that failed.
Original Press Release from John Durham Executive Director of University Communications
East Carolina University officials are investigating complaints of unnecessary force exercised by law enforcement officers as thousands of people stormed the field at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium Saturday to celebrate the Pirates’ win over West Virginia University.
ECU Police Chief Scott Shelton said university officers are interviewing witnesses and analyzing photos and videotapes. The complaints are varied and include assertions that officers punched a fan and threw another to the ground. Shelton said, “Preliminary investigation indicates excessive force was used in an incident of most concern by complainants.”
ECU police are assisted at home football games by officers from a number of jurisdictions, including the City of Greenville, Pitt County Sheriff’s Department, the City of Kinston, and Lenoir County. Shelton said he will meet Monday with Greenville Police Chief Bill Anderson to seek his assistance in the investigation.
Shelton said that at a briefing before the game, all officers were told that if ECU won the game and fans attempted to come onto the field, officers should try to deter them by making themselves visible. But if that failed, he said, officers were instructed to step back and focus on making sure that those on the field stayed safe.
“Obviously, the safety of the students, fans and athletes at the game is our first concern,” Shelton said. “It is simply unacceptable that anyone at a game is the victim of excessive force.”
Shelton said he hopes to have at least a preliminary report on the complaints within a day or two.

I witnessed the great injustice done to my fellow students, who intoxicated or not were brutally beaten. One other witness mentions an officer with baton drawn, I too recall this very same scene. It was only a hand full of officers who randomly picked male students from the herd and brutally attacked them. I saw between 5-10 male students body slammed, pinned down, and cuffed. This is unacceptable, that a few individual officers would use their power to attack the very students they were supposed to protect. Anyone who was not there, is NOT allowed to assume that it was just a few rowdy kids, they were just random faces in the crowd that were chosen by these men who disgraced our legal system.
I encourage my fellow students and all others who may have seen this incident to not let these individuals get away or to let this situation be forgotten. We should take this to a court of law where these individuals can be punished for there inexcusable actions.
I for one would be willing to stand up for the innocent and give an account of the horror that I, myself witnessed.
East Carolina must address this problem!
I have seen the videos and they are disturbing. I thought officers are suppose to serve and protect. But who will protect the people from the officers the kids were happy over ECU winning the game and some were brutally beaten and for what? Is it a crime to get excited over your home team winning? I was so excited that ECU won but my excitement turned into disappointment at the way people are treated by some of the men and women in law enforcement that need anger management. Believe me their are a lot of good officers but it just takes a few to make them all look bad. These people came out paid their money for tickets to support their home team and when they win they can’t get excited! In all the videos that I saw I did’nt see anybody hit an officer but I did see officer beating numerous people I guess its just because the people were running past them on the field and that probably made them mad since some of them demand respect as if they are some kind of god that we as citizens have to worship. I am all for abiding by the law and I respect all people not just police and sheriff.
I commend the officers in their effort to keep a bunch of Dumb Drunk A$$ in control. The fans can knock down an officer in his course of duty and he’s wrong when he get up and does his job. You people in Greenville is so STUPID when it comes to a game. You don’t know how to handle nothing. A bunch of stupid grown up kids. That’s why your kids are stupid because the parents are stupid. The ECU fans is just like the previous coaches. DRUNKS. You probably won’t win another game this season. One Game and you goes Ape S***t.
I have quite a few shots of the moments directly after the game. I have a couple of pictures that clearly shows officers standing or kneeling over what would appear to be physically (handcuffs maybe) students. One shot in particular is very disturbing and that pictures shows an officer with his baton already drawn and yet there are only other officers standing around him.
How are these pictures even possible if the officers were intructed to step back? I have yet to see any anger in any of the faces of the fans that were rushing the field.
There are Police men here in Greenville that are Cocky anyways and think they can do anything or get away with anything they want. They knew that if they won that game how it was going to be. They should have just let the kids go because there was no way that they were going to stop them. What they did was uncalled for.
here is a video of one of the cops pounding away at some poor kid. My husband went to the game; I thought he was just missing with me when he said the cops beat the He11 out of a few of the fans but the videos prove otherwise. This is REALLY disturbing.

I saw alot since I was sitting in Club Level nearest the scoreboard. The fans started running through the gate and an officer was knocked down since he was going against the traffic. He got up probably mad and tried to grab the fans. He grabbed a blonde male wearing a white shirt and khaki shorts and picked him up and slammed him hard to the ground. Another fan was “caught” and several officers jumped on him to handcuff him. Several punches were thrown while the fan was on the ground with his hands behind his back. About six fans were handcuffed forcefully with their hands behind their back and pushed down to their knees.
I am not a student and have been going to ECU games for about 30 years. The agressive behavior by the officers were uncalled for since the fans were running to the team to celebrate their huge win. The goal posts were on the ground out of harms way. I do hope the fans were not charged. Definitely was disturbing. ECU, please decide what to do so this will not happen again.
I am glad that the story has been make public. There was no reason that the officers should have taken citizens to the ground and then put a knee into their back. Was excessive force needed to make sure that the fan did not become too excited over the game?
THANK YOU FOR REPORTING ON THIS! Please dont let this go by without following up. The video clips I have seen are unacceptable behavior for an officer.
