Homicide Investigation Underway Aboard Camp Lejeune
Camp Lejeune’s 2D Marines Logistics Group’s Captain Timothy Patrick tells Nine On Your Side Private Jonathan Law is in custody with military authorities but is at Pitt County Memorial Hospital in serious condition from what appears to be self-inflicted wounds. The body of the victim was found early Friday morning in the woods near the French Creek area, west of the main gate. That is on base. They are not sure what the weapon was, but they do say it was not a firearm. They are waiting on autopsy results to find out the cause of death. Patrick says base authorities started receiving calls about the homicide around 1 o’clock Friday morning.
Law, from Clark County, Nevada, has not been charged yet so he is not being called a suspect. We understand Law attended Silverado High School in Las Vegas. Camp Lejeune officials say Law joined the Marine Corps August 15, 2006 and that he deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom from August 2007 to March 2008. Law has received awards including: the Iraqi Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.
Officials say Law is a supply administration clerk assigned to 2nd Supply Battalion, 2nd Marine Logistics Groups, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, NC. His duties focus on keeping up with military gear and equipment.
Base authorities aren’t releasing information about the victim yet. They are waiting until 24 hours after the next of kin have been notified. The relationship between the victim and Law is unknown at this time.
Captain Patrick says he has no information on whether this incident was connected to the Fort Hood, Texas incident. Patrick says at no time did the base go on lockdown in response to this incident.
