PORTSMOUTH, Va. (AP) - An overdue kite-surfer who became the object of a search by the U.S. Coast Guard as Tropical Storm Hanna approached the North Carolina coast has turned up safe.
A statement from the Coast Guard on Friday says 31-year-old Frank Mueller became separated from a companion while kite-surfing between Harkers Island and Cape Lookout. The friend reported Mueller overdue when he did not return by 5:30 p.m.
Officials said Mueller made it back to the beach by himself at approximately 10 p.m., and called 911.
The Coast Guard dispatched a 25-foot rescue boat from Fort Macon, N.C., and an HH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from Air Station Elizabeth City, N.C.
