NEW BERN, N.C. (AP) - Leaders at a North Carolina community college will discuss changing the campus smoking ban following complaints from neighbors about off-campus smoking.
The Sun Journal of New Bern reports that trustees at Craven Community College’s New Bern campus will meet Tuesday to consider amending an August smoking ban to create a designated smoking area on campus.
College officials say the ban has pushed smoking students, faculty and staff at the coastal school to the outskirts of campus. They say that’s polluting air for surrounding neighbors and creating a hazard in the roadways as smokers compete for space with motorists.
Trustees say neighbors have complained.
A statewide smoking ban takes effect in January.
