Suspect still on the run in Washington carjacking, shooting
A community in the east is on edge tonight after a kidnaping at a local hair salon last night sent authorities on a manhunt.
Police are still looking for the carjacking suspect.
The whole altercation started in a parking lot off Avon Avenue when Nidia Martinez left work in Washington.
Washington Police say a gunman approached Martinez and made her drive off.
Her husband says his wife was able to call him on her cell phone while driving and was able to give him directions on where the suspect was making her go.
Her husband was able to track them down using the directions she kept saying out loud while the phone was on whithout the suspect knowing.
The car made it to Highland Drive, where her husband says the car jacker told her to turn off a dome light. She Martinez him she had to get out of the car to do that and when she did, she ran across the street to a nearby nursing home.
Before jumping out of the car, Martinez left it in gear. Edwardo pulled up in time to hear a gun go off in his wife’s car as the gunman struggled to get it under control. He jumped out of his car thinking his wife had been shot that’s when the gunman fired at him then ran off.
The suspect was last seen entering a wooded area of Highland Drive on foot.
Washington police officers along with Beaufort County sheriff’s deputies blocked off the area and surrounding neighborhoods to search for the suspect, but came up empty handed.
At one point more than 25 law enforcement officers were helping in the search and police tell us they are still searching in the area.
They say he’s around 6 foot tall, 200 pounds with dreadlocks and wearing a grey hooded sweatshirt and possibly a white baseball hat.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Washington Police Department at 252-946-1444 or Beaufort County Crimestoppers at 252-974-6400.
