Hundreds of workers will soon lose their jobs on UNC campuses because of budget cuts.

System President Erskine Bowles says Governor Bev Perdue’s budget proposal cuts $170 million more in funding than they had anticipated.

That means the university system’s 16 campuses must cut costs, and that could lead to laying off   400 to 500 people, according to Bowles.

And he says academic quality will suffer.

“Larger classes, fewer courses, longer retention, and graduation rates… it’s going to have a real negative affect,” Bowles said Thursday.

The UNC system is also delaying maintenance and reducing travel.

Wednesday, Nine On Your Side reported that if ECU has to cut jobs, it will start with those that are currently vacant.
