Obama targets greenhouse gases, fuel efficiency
Published: January 26, 2009
WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama is ordering reviews that could allow states to impose higher auto emission standards and force automakers to produce more fuel-efficient cars.
Announcing the moves at the White House this morning, Obama said the goal is not to burden an already struggling industry but rather help it prepare for the future.
Obama also talked of reversing the nation’s dependence on foreign oil and “building a new energy economy that will create millions of jobs.“ To that end, he’s directing his administration to come up with new auto fuel-efficiency guidelines in time to cover 2011 model-year cars.
