Viewer’s Voice

Some of the stories we do can set people off and do it quickly.

For instance, any story on Hispanics in the east will draw quick and passionate response from some of you.

But we begin tonight’s Viewer’s Voice with an issue that gets even quicker response- how we cover the war in Iraq.

This week we reported on the five year anniversary of the war in Iraq.

We told you about the events commemorating American losses, but we got a call from one viewer who didn't like what we did.

"You kind of left out the Iraqis who died in Iraq. Why don't you include that in your report instead of this partisan, biased political reporting that you substitute for telling the truth,” they asked.

Well, the fact is we did just that.  Here's what Annette said, "To give you an idea of this war's impact, we looked up these numbers. The military says almost four thousand American troops have lost their lives in operation Iraqi freedom. It's injured more than twenty nine thousand of our service members. Estimates of Iraqis killed range from more than 90 thousand to more than one million.”

Remember, this day was about the loss of American troops in the five years we have been at war in Iraq.

Then, we got an email from someone complaining about our coverage of Beaufort county taking it's automated answering machine off line in order to avoid having a Spanish option.

One viewer wrote, "It is quite obvious to me your continuous prejudice against the Hispanics. Why don't you interview some of the eastern NC farmers who are having to depend on these people because our own are too good or too lazy to do manual labor in the fields anymore?”

Well, viewer we don't believe that simply covering an event like the situation in Beaufort County means we are taking sides or even hurting one group of people. In fact, we have done many stories on the pros and cons of the situation with Hispanics in our community.

Thanks to all who wrote and called for this week’s Viewer’s Voice.
