Viewer’s Voice: Friday the 13th Edition

Because of today’s news coverage we are limiting our viewer’s voice to one concern. This one is about a piece of video we showed the morning after UNC beat Duke. UNC students were jumping over bonfires in celebration. We don’t condone that. A viewer, who calls herself “oriental grandmother,” wrote this:

I have great respect for you, but showing the clip of the college kids jumping over a bonfire is really irresponsible on your part. Please consider that not only do adults watch your news, but also school age children.  If just one of these kids tries to copy it, the results could be disastrous.

Well *oriental grandmother* you are right, it is a very dangerous thing to do and children certainly should never try it. But we also feel it was an important news story. Our news director Adam Henning put it this way, “it is always a tough call when it comes to censoring video and information; we tend to err on the side of letting viewers decide what is appropriate for their young children to watch.“ Thanks for your comments.
