Raleigh’s mayor ties for longest run in the office

    RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - The newly re-elected mayor of Raleigh has tied for the longest consecutive run in that office in the North Carolina capital city’s history.
    The News & Observer of Raleigh reported that Mayor Charles Meeker was re-elected Tuesday to his fifth term, tying the 59-year-old with Avery C. Upchurch as the mayor with the longest consecutive run.
    Meeker defeated three opponents, who ended up with 38 percent of the vote.
    In Fayetteville, multiple media outlets reported that Mayor Tony Chavonne will face retired soldier Bob White in a general election in November. Unofficial vote totals show Chavonne received 4,306 votes, while White got 987. Three other people also ran for mayor.
