(AP) - Four companies that were looking to build large landfills in North Carolina are now asking the state for nearly $25 million as compensation.

A new state law that bars landfills in certain areas derailed three projects.

Waste Industries USA is seeking $13.6 million to compensate for its planned landfill in Camden County.

Alligator River Recycling is requesting $2.4 million to cover expenses for a planned facility in Hyde County.

Waste Management of the Carolinas and Riegel Ridge Partners have filed separate requests totaling $8.6 million. The companies had worked on a proposed landfill in Columbus County.

The General Assembly approved a measure last year allowing companies to recoup their costs if the new regulations derailed their projects.
