Aaliyah: Still Looking for a Forever Family

Nine on your side has interviewed dozens of kids in the state who are waiting to be adopted and it’s not always easy to get them to open up. But one girl we talked with had no problem with speaking her mind. And tonight despite her openness, she is still waiting for a family and a place to call home. Carley Wegner has an update on Aaliyah.

“I take this as a big learning experience and ya know, take life by the hand and walk with it; you got to become friends with life.“

After meeting adorable kids week after week, I don’t have any favorites but I do have some conversations that are extremely memorable, sitting down with Aaliyah is one of them.

“I believe that only tough stuff makes you stronger. You can’t go through life at ease. Cause if then life something bad hits you later in life you it’s going to hit you hard.“

One of her challenges is finding a family.

“Do you know how long it’s been since I have said hello to someone and called them mom?“

Now, almost a year later, she still has no one to call mom or dad. She remains in a good foster home but she knows that’s not permanent.

“One thing I can say about Aaliyah is she is really resilient in her past she has in terms of placement she hasn’t let that detour her from being wanted to be adopted. She has a great desire to be in that permanent family.“

One of Aaliyah’s best qualities is how honest she is and she’s expressed she really wants a two parent family.

“In foster care, I have had to learn to be advocates for themselves when there is nobody else and she doesn’t have family she has to be her own spokesperson and because of that she does a wonderful job.“

But the Children’s Home Society hopes she won’t have to advocate for herself for much longer and a family will come forward.
