If we plan for our children and grandchildren to live with the same quality of life that we have, then we need to start preserving what we have left.  With that in mind, WNCT is On Your Side with our new “Make It Green” initiative.

Every night in our 6pm newscast, make it green will provide you with stories and information on how to live a more environmentally friendly life.  We’ll also host community events where we can all make it green together.

So to kick off “Make It Green” we want to introduce you to solar paint; it may do more than just bring needed color to a room in your house. Scientists at UNC are working on a solar paint that could power your home.

The university has received more than $17M in federal stimulus funds to find a way to make the idea affordable.  An expensive, first generation version has already been created.
The team will also study how to store solar energy to use later.

Now it will be a few years before you can find solar paint at your local hardware stores, so in the meantime if you want to start to “Make It Green” with paint use an eco friendly paint, like a water based latex paint, natural paints, milk paints, whitewashes, and recycled paints.

All of these have less of an ecological impact than oil based paints.
