Snow blankets NC mountains, roads freezing

A winter storm warning remained in effect for some mountain counties of North Carolina, where a cold weather system dropped 3 to 6 inches of snow. The National Weather Service said the warning was to expire tomorrow morning. Forecasts said as little as an inch of additional accumulation was expected overnight, except along the ridges of the Tennessee border. Forecasters also warned of winds gusting to 45 mph at times in higher elevations that would bring wind chill readings between minus 10 and minus 20. Residents were warned that rural roads would be icy although major highways had been cleared of snow. The weather forced some businesses to close early and canceled some high school basketball games.
