PINEHURST, N.C. (AP) - North Carolina's four Republican candidates for governor say they're committed to cutting spending in state government.
But Salisbury attorney Bill Graham, Charlotte Mayor Pat McCrory, former Supreme Court Justice Bob Orr and state Sen. Fred Smith differ on the best approach to cutting taxes.
All four took part Thursday in a debate in Pinehurst that will televised later this month.
McCrory wants to reduce the state's personal income tax rate, which he believes is too high compared to surrounding states. Orr said that can't be done without a larger reform of North Carolina's entire tax system.
Smith said state government had generated billions of dollars in surplus money and that it was squandered by Democrats in power. Graham pushed his proposal to make overtime income exempt from state income taxes.
