RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - The Marine arrested in Mexico in the killing of a pregnant colleague is awaiting extradition back to the U.S.
Speaking to The Associated Press after his arrest, Cesar Laurean was asked if he wanted to say anything. He said "Proof," but wouldn't explain. Asked what he would do next, he answered, "Do I have a choice?...I don't know."
Laurean is charged with murder in the death of fellow Marine Maria Lauterbach, whose burned remains and those of her fetus were found in January in his backyard in North Carolina. Lauterbach had earlier accused Laurean of rape.
The FBI says it hopes Laurean can be brought back to the U.S. as quickly as possible. But a prosecutor in North Carolina says it could be a year or two before Laurean returns if he fights extradition.
Laurean was arrested Thursday night after a three-month search.
