April 10, 2008- The Greenville-Pitt County Senior Games Program is a leading health promotion and well-being program for the citizens in Pitt County. The local games are scheduled for April 10 – May 1, 2008, with golf being held on May 22. The official opening ceremonies, SilverArts Follies and SilverArts Showcase will be held on Thursday, April 10 at The Zone located on Reedy Branch Road. The SilverArts Showcase which includes visual, literary and heritage arts will open at 5:30pm. The SilverArts Follies, which is the performing arts component of SilverArts, and the Opening Ceremonies, will begin at 7:00pm. Opening Ceremonies will include recognition of the participants, the lighting of the Senior Games torch, and the presentation of the Pioneer Spirit Awards. Over three hundred athletes and artists age 55 and over will be competing in more than 40 sports events, and the SilverArts.
Everyone is invited to “Join the Team for Fun and Fitness” by coming out to support our Senior Games athletes and artists. All events are free and open to the public.
Greenville-Pitt County Senior Games is one of 54 local games sanctioned by North Carolina Senior Games. First, second, and third place winners on the local level will qualify to compete in the N.C. Senior Games State Finals this fall. This is a qualifying year for National Games; therefore winners on the state level will be qualifying to compete in the National Senior Games to be held in San Francisco, California in the summer of 2009. The Greenville-Pitt County Senior Games are coordinated by Pitt County Community Schools and Recreation and the Greenville Recreation and Parks Department.
