GREENVILLE—Michele Albertson, a Pitt Community College Radiography student, was recently named the Greenville Morning Rotary Club’s 2008 Sen. Ed N. Warren Scholarship recipient.
Albertson, who grew up in rural South Mills, has a 3.8 grade point average at PCC and is Vice President of Service for the college’s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society.
“Growing up on a farm taught me a lot about responsibility, but that is also where I learned about community service and giving to others,” Albertson told Rotary Club members. “Living in a small community allowed me to actually see the results of people helping others.”
Albertson’s volunteer service includes 4-H projects, delivering Meals on Wheels and organizing meals at Greenville’s Hope Lodge. Through her church, she took part in an eye-opening and life-changing mission trip to Ecuador in 2005.
“I went (to Ecuador) thinking I would go and help change some people’s lives, but, in reality, it was a life-changing experience for me,” Albertson said. “I saw people living in places that you cannot imagine. I went to schools and helped pass out hygiene kits to children.
“… They thought we had given them the world and didn’t want to use these gifts themselves; they wanted to give them to their parents.”
Earlier this month, Albertson participated in PCC’s Academic Excellence Awards Luncheon. The annual event pays tribute to 50 Pitt students who have performed extremely well both in and out of the classroom.
Albertson, who will receive $1,000 through the Warren Scholarship, says that once she completes the two-year Radiography curriculum at PCC, she intends to continue her education at the college to become certified in Computed Tomography and Magnetic Resonance Imaging.
“Attending PCC has given me the benefit of being tutored by exceptional teachers and the benefit of smaller classes with the opportunity for individual attention,” Albertson said.
Greenville Morning Rotary’s Warren Scholarship was established three years ago to honor former club member and North Carolina State Senator Ed N. Warren. The scholarship is awarded annually to a deserving PCC student who embraces the club’s ideals through academic achievements, commitment to hard work, involvement in school activities and service to the community.
