The 2008 Wayne County Public Schools’ (WCPS) graduating classes earned millions of dollars in aid to attend colleges and universities throughout North Carolina and across the nation. The graduates earned around $4.4 million in one time or annual grants, scholarships, and work-study aid. Calculating the total amounts of renewable aid, graduates from the seven high schools earned more than $12 million.
Some of the most prestigious awards that top the list include the Gates Millennium scholarship ($500,000), a Duke Trinity scholarship ($216,000), and a Cornell University grant ($158,876). WCPS also had graduates who earned scholarships to Clemson University, Howard University, and Princeton University. The school district also had one graduate who earned the NC State University Parks scholarship and another who earned the UNC Chapel Hill Morehead-Cain scholarship.
“We congratulate all of the recent graduates for their academic achievements,” states Dr. Steven Taylor, WCPS Superintendent. “Every school in our district strives to equip students with the necessary tools to succeed in the 21st Century. By taking advantage of the rigorous academic programs offered, our recent graduates have proven they can be successful in their college aspirations.”
The results for the 2008 graduating class are as follows:
Charles B Aycock High
53 graduates were awarded 168 offers of scholarships, grants, and other financial aid offers. The offers added up to $526,686. When calculated with renewal, students earned $1,964,848.
Eastern Wayne High
78 graduates received 281 offers for assistance totaling $1,028,399.
When calculated with renewal, students earned $2,556,578.
Goldsboro High
56 graduates were awarded 116 offers of assistance totaling $1,184,022.
When calculated with renewal, students earned $1,539,086.
Rosewood High
33 graduates received 83 offers for assistance worth $796,304 in scholarships and $3,058,766 in renewable financial support.
Southern Wayne High
52 graduates received a total of 167 offers for assistance. Their total amount of scholarship money equaled $433,021. When calculated with renewal, students earned $1,545,657.
Spring Creek High
30 graduates were awarded $263,715 in scholarships and $1,034,160 in renewable money. The graduates received 64 scholarships.
Wayne Early Middle College High
10 graduates $126,570 in scholarships and $411,240 in renewable money.
The graduates received 27 scholarships.
