RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - A man suspected in the rape of a North Carolina woman who eluded police for more than a decade has been sentenced to 40 years in prison after he was found in Virginia.
The News & Observer of Raleigh reported Friday that 45-year-old Danny Chavis has pleaded guilty to second-degree rape, second-degree kidnapping and other charges related to the 1994 attack in Raleigh.
Under a state law valid in 1994, Chavis may be eligible for parole.
Authorities said Chavis and co-defendant Christopher McClam dragged a woman behind a house and raped her Jan. 4, 1994. McClam was arrested shortly after the attack and is serving a life sentence for rape and robbery.
Chavis eluded police until the case was reopened in 2006, and police discovered he was living in Richmond, Va., under a different name.
