LILLINGTON, N.C. (AP) - A woman accused of partially castrating a man with her fingernails at a Christmas party has pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge rather than face another trial.
The Fayetteville Observer reports that Rebecca Dawson pleaded guilty Monday in Harnett County Superior Court to misdemeanor assault inflicting serious injury. Her retrial was scheduled to begin Monday.
Dawson was accused of trying to tear off a man's scrotum at a 2006 Christmas party. Her defense attorney argued that Dawson grabbed the man in self defense. But the man testified that an intoxicated Dawson sank her nails into his genitals after he refused to let her drive home.
During the first trial in December, jurors deadlocked 8-4 on charges of malicious castration and assault with intent to inflict serious injury.
